I find it difficult to give a reasoned response to John Bost's latest missal of misinformation (letter on June 30). It is stark evidence that the extreme political right has a well-oiled propaganda machine that would make Joseph Goebbels proud.
Obama waging a war on women? Ridiculous! It simply does not comport with the facts or the truth for that matter as evidenced by the following. Obama and the Democrats introduced and got Congress to pass the Lily Ledbetter Act that overruled a recent Supreme Court decision that prevented Ms. Ledbetter from filing a discrimination claim with the EEOC for equal pay. The act restored the old law that the 18-day time limit for job discrimination runs anew with each paycheck received. Almost all Republicans voted against it. Obama proposed and sent to Congress a bill that would guarantee equal pay for women who are payed on average 30 percent less than men for doing the same job. Republicans killed it in the Senate with the filibuster. Obama's Affordable Care Act provides contraceptives to women which allows them more control with the reproductive process and in most cases is essential for women's health at no cost through their health insurance. The list goes on and on.
This a typical tactic of the Right. While waging a war on women they accuse the other side of the very same thing in order to convince an all-to-often gullible voting public that they are the good guys. Unfortunately, it often works all to well to the detriment of working-class Americans.
A reasonable person must question how supposedly intelligent people can resort to such tactics. Perhaps its genetic as proposed by a recent study by the British weekly magazine, "New Scientist."
I quote, "A rather unflattering view of conservatives emerges from the studies. They are portrayed as dogmatic, routine-loving individuals, while liberals come across as free-spirited and open minded folk."
The proposal that genetics influences ones political tendencies seems plausible. Perhaps we liberals should not be so hard on them. After all they were born that way.
