To me, at least, there's always been a sense of excitement and a bit of apprehension as the days of August go by. This is the last month for summer vacations and a time to enjoy county fairs. For students and parents, it's time to head to the mall and area stores to get ready for the new school year. And then there's football - practice has begun, and soon we'll be hearing music as members of the high school marching bands learn this year's songs.
This August is not an easy, relaxing month in our newsroom. We've had an extra full page to put together each day for the 2012 Summer Olympics - the last one paginated will be in Monday's paper. We're juggling duties as staff members go on well-deserved vacations, and we've been out at the Frederick and Warren county fairs, shooting photos and conducting interviews. The last fair we'll cover will be the Shenandoah County Fair, which runs from Aug. 24 to Sept 1.
And then, as I noted above, there's football. While local high school teams practice, we are working on our annual football preview special section. This year, it's going to be bigger than ever. Photos are being shot at practices, coaches are being interviewed and editors are pulling wire copy for previews and schedules for college and NFL teams. Our football section will be published on Aug. 24, in time for the season's first games.
Football energizes and unites a community, and I am looking forward to seeing photos, online slideshows, features on local players and game stories from our staff. I'd also love to see photos of the players (JV and middle school, too!), band members, fans and cheerleaders from mom, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and grandparents in our paper this season. Email them to email@example.com, or go online at nvdaily.com/virtual to upload them. We'll get as many as possible in the paper and on nvdaily.com.
