Editorial: Drop, cover, hold on today

More than 18 million people in the United States and other parts of the world have signed up to participate in the Great ShakeOut today. Earthquake drills will take place in schools, businesses and homes at 10:18 a.m. local time.

The drills will include drop, cover and hold on: drop to the ground, take cover under a desk or table and hold on to it.

Up until last August 2011, Virginians weren't used to feeling the ground rumble below their feet. But a 5.8-magnitude earthquake - the strongest quake on the East Coast in decades - changed that.

Be prepared for the next East Coast quake. Visit shakeout.org/southeast for tips on how to protect yourself, including creating a disaster-preparedness plan, creating an emergency supply kit and checking your home for structural weaknesses and unsecured objects.

Earthquake Drills are certainly better than nothing and gives people something to do rather than panic, but all of this sounds too much like the 50's when school children were suppose to hide under their desk if the country was nuked.

Until buildings are actually constructed to withstand things like earthquakes, it's the luck of the draw. Tornadoes have grown to be more common now, and much more of a threat in the Shenandoah Valley since our mountains were destroyed by for this interstate and the ongoing development.

The more the natural world is compromised, the more problems we will have and sinkholes are another good example.

...we will have and sinkholes are another good example. And people that build there expensive houses on the side of cliffs/steep grades, gravity eventually wins.
