Many voters in the Northern Shenandoah Valley will vote in a new Congressional district in November. As a result of the 2010 Census, Virginia's old 6th Congressional District has new boundaries and new voters.
Bob Goodlatte, the 6th District incumbent, is opposed by a Andy Schmookler of Woodstock. Schmookler believes the GOP has been hijacked by a group that takes extreme positions that serve to create conflict and prevent our government from taking care of the people's business.
Too often we hear that American politics has become polarized between the extreme left and extreme right. To those who adhere to this position, Schmookler says, "Get real. Nothing in American politics warrants being called 'extreme left.' It is clear that all of the extremism is on the extreme right."
For example, while millions are without work, Congress is fighting over how much to cut food stamps and whether to gut Medicare and Social Security. Schmookler believes we need to create jobs and support food stamps, Medicare and Social Security.
Experts agree we need to increase revenues to avoid deficits; meanwhile most Republicans, including Bob Goodlatte, have signed Grover Norquist's pledge never to increase taxes. Schmookler believes Republicans should support the intelligent tax policies of the Reagan years.
Instead of gutting or abolishing the EPA, Schmookler believes we should support the EPA and take the lead in creating new energy technologies.
Current economic problems are largely the result of our neglect of the financial regulatory system established during the Great Depression. Meanwhile, Congress is fighting over funding financial regulatory reforms of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Schmookler supports reinstituting the kinds of financial regulation that served us so well for generations.
President Obama's health care reform efforts have many antecedents in U.S. political history, including proposals from Republican presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Richard Nixon. The extreme right of the Republican Party wants to repeal Obamacare. Schmookler supports building upon and improving the Affordable Care Act.
We need someone in Congress who supports humane, caring, constructive, progressive and preferably nonpartisan solutions to the issues facing America today. Support Andy Schmookler for Congress in the 6th District.
