Letter to the Editor: Kudos for Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office

The last weekend in September brought some terrible news for us. One of our dear friends passed suddenly. We received a call from Shenandoah County dispatch late in the night and were asked to come and be with our friend's daughter until out-of-state family could arrive.

I would like to publicly give thanks and praise to the members of the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office who we saw that night. Each and every member of the department performed their jobs in a thorough and professional manner, all the while making sure that our friend's daughter was treated with the utmost kindness.

The sheriff's office, under a relatively new program, even provided the services of a chaplain who was with us for most of the night. Thank you so very much to Chaplain Dave Casto, investigator Poe, deputy John Treese and to the many other members of the sheriff's office who we did not get names of but who helped out. Bless you all.

Our Sheriff's department is one of the best performing public service organizations in the county. Yet it and the Sheriff constantly face a hostile Board of Supervisors when resources are allocated. The latest effort by District 6 Supervisor Conrad Helsley to take funds from the Sheriff's Department to use for the Regional Jail that Sheriff Carter opposes is a naked effort to divert money to the jail, deprive the Sheriff's department of much-needed money, and punish Sheriff Carter for his opposition. Shame on you Helsley.

i have always thought sheriff carter and his dept. have done a good job for the "common folk" and always have to fight the b.o.s. I agree with vp on this one, don't consider his opinion and then want his money. shame on the whole b.o.s.
