Letter to the Editor: Liberals don't let facts get in their way

Editor:

If you are one of the few who are undecided, consider the following: there are 46.37 million Americans on food stamps. There were 31 million on food stamps at this time four years ago. That is 15 million more Americans on food stamps since Barack Obama became president. This costs those of us who pay taxes $6 billion a month. This is a direct reflection of the unemployment rate.

In the 60 years prior to Obama's presidency, the unemployment rate was above 8 percent only 39 months. Under Obama, unemployment has been above 8 percent a total of 43 months. Yet he has not met with his own jobs committee for a year.

It now costs an average of $3.80 for a gallon of gas. Four years ago, it was $1.84 a gallon. The unemployment rate, the price of gas, and the number of people on food stamps would all go down if we had a president who would build the Keystone Pipeline.

The vice president, in North Carolina recently, admitted that the middle class has been "buried" the last four years. Obama promised to cut the deficit in half. Instead, he took it from $12 trillion to $16 trillion, adding as much as all other presidents combined. We are worse off than we were four years ago!

We still give countries like Libya and Egypt millions in foreign aid after they attacked our embassies and killed our ambassador. The Obama administration chose to place this blame on someone else. (That's nothing new.) It has been proven that we had plenty of warning and our own ambassador was asking for more protection, but the Obama administration chose to ignore it and then lie to cover it up. (That's nothing new, either.) While this was going on, Obama refused to meet with foreign leaders because he would rather go on "The View" with Whoopi, and go party with Jay-Z.

These are the facts, but the problem with liberals is they don't let a little thing like the facts get in their way. If you are an independent, you need only to look at the past four years and decide if this country can survive another four years like this.

Amazingly Troy, the world DIDN'T start on Jan 20, 2009, and recessions don't stop on a dime, no matter WHO is President (despite what the fact-free team tells you).

Kind of funny for you to be claiming liberals don't "let facts get in their way", while simultaneously regurgitating a fistful of fibs.

Romney's term as Governor of Massachusetts ended January 4, 2007. Romney filed papers to establish a formal exploratory presidential campaign committee on his next-to-last day in office as governor. Romney has NOT held a job since 2007.

Cato's* Director of Foreign Policy Christopher Preble Studies argues that America's position as an unrivaled superpower tempts policymakers to constantly overreach and to redefine ever more broadly the "national interest."

Christopher Preble says, “Romney’s likely to be in the mold of George W. Bush when it comes to foreign policy if he were elected.”

    * The Cato Institute is an American libertarian think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C. Cato's non-interventionist foreign policy views, and strong support for civil liberties, have frequently led Cato scholars to criticize those in power, both Republican and Democratic. They were against President George W. Bush's 2003 invasion of Iraq. (Wikipedia)

    From William Cohen article:

The most mysterious of the unexplained mysteries about Mitt Romney’s considerable wealth is how he was able to amass between $21 million and $102 million in his individual retirement account during the 15 years he was at Bain Capital LLC. How did he do it, given the relatively small amounts that the law permits to be contributed to such a plan on an annual basis?

(William D. Cohan, a former investment banker and the author of “Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World,” is a Bloomberg View columnist. The opinions expressed are his own.)

Quote from Troy Dean in his letter "the problem with liberals is they don't let a little thing like the facts get in their way".

Poor Troy Dean has fallen down the rabbit hole and is living along with Alice in a fantasy world in "Alice's Wonderland" where up is down and down is up and there are talking rabbits and Mad Hatters and grinning Chesire Cat, and so on and so on-----------.

I guess that is as good an explanation as any when Troy Dean makes such an idiotic statement in a letter in which he so easily ignores what is truth and as playnotwork puts it, "regurgitating a fistful of fibs"----- I call them lies.

Romney/Ryan/Republicans have played loose and easy with the facts extensively and have had no problem with telling out-and-out lies to the point that even the non-partisan fact-checkers have given some of their lies the maximum number of "Pinocchios" for being so untrue. For Mr. Dean to totally ignore THAT fact while at the same time accusing liberals of what Romney/Ryan/Republicans have been doing is almost laughable.

Both sides are guilty of not always being honest, and anyone who is still "undecided" needs to take the effort to do research at numerous, hopefully non-partisan sources to see what is true and what is not and then go from there to decide who they want to lead this country. But the nonsense in Troy Dean's letter is an insult to the intelligence of any "thinking", honest person who does not walk around with a bag over their head.

804 lies listed chronologically with comments and reference source weblinks

Mitt Ryan and Paul Romney are untrustworthy ideological twins.

Heavy is the head that wears the self-appointed crown.

Neither candidate from the Dominionist Empire Musical Chairs Party is worth our time or attention.

    Therefore...

I still plan to vote for my neighbor's cat...

    ...Visits often,
    ...Never lies,
...Stays out from under the bed,
...Doesn't give borrowed money to foreign despots,
    ...Has never raised taxes,
...Treats all women with great respect...

"So whether you vote for Obama, Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party, or even Mitt Romney if you have the tax shelter to justify it, please don’t give in to teenage apathy and sit this one out. Voting is sacred. People have literally died to make it possible. And billions of people around the world are counting on your decision. On Nov. 6, don’t just sit at home writing angry comments on the Internet. Oh, and here’s a secret: Voting in an election does not disqualify you from also taking direct action. In fact, the two work rather well together. Just ask the gays".

VOTING FOR YOU CAT IS NOT AN OPTION!

John, Your cat's name must be Barak Obama.

“Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.”
    ― Winston Churchill

    Ah, vp...Just for you.

"I think I was unprepared for war." ~ George W. Bush

"This foreign policy stuff is a little frustrating." ~ George W. Bush

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." ~ George W. Bush

"Too many good docs are getting out of the business. Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." ~ George W. Bush

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." ~ George W. Bush

"Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?" ~ George W. Bush

    AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE:

"I'll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office." ~ George W. Bush

vp, Not a quote by Churchill. Sorry.

"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."

There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University makes this comment: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie (his wife), who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

    http://www.winstonchurchill.org/learn/speeches/quotations/quotes-falsely-attributed

@ jane 8 > You forced me to the internet where I learned my original source www.goodreads.com is wrong. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/List_of_misquotations says the quote is often attributed to Winston Churchill ([5]). The phrase originated with Francois Guisot (1787-1874): "Not to be a republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head." It was revived by French Premier Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929): "Not to be a socialist at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head."

Regardless of who said it, it's funny and pokes both dems and cons.

vp, The problem with our country is way past the 'poking fun' stage. It is no laughing matter what the Republicans have done to this country in their quest for the throne of power. It is absolutely amazing to me that with the Republicans receiving their marching orders from The head of the Senate Republicans Mitch McConnell (senator from Kentucky): "his number-one goal was to make sure that Barack Obama was a one-term president” that President Obama was able to accomplish anything!

Jane, a little humor doesn't hurt any situation. But blaming the Reps for everything does. Both sides contributed to the mess. The discussion should be about who has the best plan to get us out of the mess. Dems think the government is better able to do it; Reps think the government should get out of the way and let the market do it. Both assume that the players will act in a humanitarian and ethical way, which assumption has too often proven false. Until we make it true, I fear nothing will change except by chance.

not one to battle back and forth about who's right and who's wrong, i just can't figure what happened during the 8 years before obama. why has the tea party forgotten ?? it's like a time warp or something. honestly, if the gop was in the white house would gas prices be 1.84 a gal ??
would there be no umemployment ?? would there be no dificit.......no wait, that was before W. with the economy in the s***hole, no one can stop the downfall, but with some cooperation from the tea toters we could surely get more done. i'm starting to favor the cat.

    Mr Dean
You say, " These are the facts, but the problem with liberals is they don't let a little thing like the facts get in their way". I'm sorry but to be able to dismiss half the electorate in one crude generalization, ie "the problem with liberals", simply displays your propensity toward having a weak mind in my opinion

The invasive extraction of tar sands and shale deposits, as well as deep-sea drilling in the Arctic, Alaska, the Eastern Seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico, has been sold to the U.S. public as a route to energy independence, a way to create millions of new jobs and a boost to the sagging economy, but this is another corporate lie. The process of extracting shale oil through hydraulic fracking, for example, requires millions of gallons of chemically treated water that leaves behind poisoned aquifers and huge impoundment ponds of toxic waste. The process of extracting oil shale, or kerogen, requires it to be melted, meaning that tremendous amounts of energy are required for a marginal return. The process of tar sand extraction requires vast open pit mining operations or pumping underground that melts the oil with steam jets. Tar sand extraction also releases significantly more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional oil drilling, meaning an acceleration of global warming. Drilling in the Arctic, with its severe weather, costs as much as half a billion dollars per well. These processes are part of a desperate effort by corporations to make profits before a final systems collapse. Droughts are already sweeping the Midwest. The battle between farmers and fossil fuel corporations for diminishing water sources has begun. Yet our ruling elite refuses to face the stark reality of climate change. They ignore the imperative to find other ways of structuring our economies and our relationship to the environment. They myopically serve a doomed system. And, if left unstopped, the cost for all of us will be catastrophic.
