Letter to the Editor: More honesty needed in Congress

Editor:

Several Congressional Republicans, including Paul Ryan, have raged against some of the major Obama policy initiatives such as the stimulus and health care bills while at the same time availing themselves privately of the benefits of these programs.

Ryan lobbied for stimulus grants for his district while denouncing the Obama stimulus sct to the press. He privately sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services recommending a health care grant application while publicly repeatedly seeking repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Several other Republican members of Congress were equally adept at publicly opposing while privately taking advantage of Obama programs. Hal Rogers, a conservative representative from Kentucky, and former Sen. John Ensign wrote letters asking for health care reform grants while calling publicly for absolute repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Apparently these folks believe that only they are entitled to avail themselves of the benefits of these programs. More honestly and truth-telling on the part of our elected representatives like that espoused by candidate Andy Schmookler, who is running against Rep. Bob Goodlatte in the 6th District, is warranted.

Andy Schmookler is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant room of career politicians who spend their time raising funds to get re-elected. Goodlatte has had a free ride with too many perks, too many salary increases and nothing to show for it. Nothing for the people - that is.

It's about time someone finally challenges Bob Goodlatte: he has overstayed his welcome. Mr. Schmookler is an intelligent man with some strong ideas about representing us for a change.

VOTE 4 Andy Schmookler in November!
