As frightening as the looming fiscal cliff is, what's more frightening is what could tag along for the ride should a solution pass through Congress.
The National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, or NDAA, was a military budgetary bill that was necessary to pass. Added to the bill was the ability of the military to arrest and indefinitely detain persons suspected of terrorism without the right of habeas corpus. The definition of a "suspected terrorist" is vague and could be applied to anyone, allowing abuse and corruption.
The NDAA was guaranteed to pass through Congress because of the urgency to do so. We are in a similar situation this year. A financial disaster is coming and the careers of every politician depend on how they handle this dire situation. So naturally, a solution is guaranteed to push through Congress, and this is very dangerous for American liberty.
As with the NDAA and the striking of habeas corpus, what might we expect this year? Internet censorship? Possibly. Bills like PIPA, SOPA, and CISPA, which would effectively kill free speech over the internet, have all failed to pass. Because of their persistent and opportunistic nature, now is the time to act. I encourage everyone to research and discuss these bills, contact your representatives in Congress and urge them to block all forms of Internet censorship within this upcoming bill.
