Letter to the Editor: Romney's past shows he can grow money for himself
Editor: So, Romney was the big hero of the 2002 Olympics, but did you know he did it with the help of federal dollars? For someone who is so anti-government, isn't it interesting that he took money he doesn't believe in. And his big claim of balancing the state budget when governor was an easy one - governors are mandated by state law to balance the state budget. As far as job creation, the 12 million jobs he claims he will create will happen if he is president or not, according to economists. And his job as a venture capitalist meant he and his company would invest in companies and eventually the debt imposed on these companies would be so great that they went bankrupt and many people lost jobs they had for years. Is this the way to grow the economy, or just a way to grow money for himself? Sharon Dingus, Edinburg 10 Comments | Leave a comment |
Thank you, Sharon.
"... critics note that while Romney likes to take credit for turning around the 2002 Winter Olympics, which had been savaged by an international bribery scandal, the federal government pumped more than $340 million into Utah (five months after 9/11), funding about 18 percent of the Games' overall cost. If money for rebuilding Interstate 15 in Utah and adding light rail are included, the federal total rounds up to $1.3 billion. (After Salt Lake City won the bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics in 1995, UTA used the city's host status to accelerate obtaining funding through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Construction began in 1997. {wiki})
"No matter how well we did cutting costs and raising revenue, we couldn't have Games without the support of the federal government," Romney says in his first book, Turnaround.
At the time, that assistance earned the wrath of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., ...
"What the Olympics Games, supposedly hosted and funded by Salt Lake City, which began in corruption and bribery, has now turned into is an incredible pork-barrel project for Salt Lake City and its environs," McCain said on the Senate floor in 2000.

Romney took charge of the SLC Olympics and with federal funding, by all accounts, was very successful. As a US taxpayer, how did I benefit from that?
Romney has stated time and time again that he will cut/stop Planned Parenthood. "Republicans want to block $70 million Planned Parenthood receives each year under Title X, a program implemented under Republican President Richard Nixon in 1970 to provide contraceptives, cancer screenings, and pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease testing at community health centers across the country."
Interesting what 'modern day' Republicans view as the important issues for the citizens of America!
What I really don't understand at all, given that the Olympics were a success, why did he have those records sealed for fifteen (15) years. He touts his success: "...helped save the Olympics." Okay, Mitt, that is not disputed so why seal your successful running of this event? Have other countries had their Olympic records sealed too?

Excellent letter, Sharon Dingus, and you have pointed out FACTS that have too often not been covered or mentioned by the media.
So Republican Romney is hypocritical as demonstrated by his anti-federal government rhetoric (that the right-wing base just 'eats up') and his 'crowing' about how he 'saved' the Olympics, while failing to mention how much it cost American taxpayers? Romney a hypocrite? Ha! Big surprise!
And thank you Jane8, for your comment and for providing the amount of money that we the taxpayers put up so Romney today can 'crow' about how 'he' saved the Olympics.
