Letter to the Editor: We value freedom (for some)
Editor: The recent decision by the Virginia House subcommittee to kill the proposal to restore the voting rights of non-violent felons abhors me not only as a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia, but also as an American. Virginia is one of a small handful of states that do not automatically restore the right to vote for non-violent felons who have served their time. As Gov. Bob McDonnell said yesterday, it's time for us to come together and allow non-violent felons who have done the time to rejoin society as full members with the rights and guarantees afforded to us under the Constitution. As a nation that values individual freedom, I find it deeply troubling that some of our very own representative lawmakers are working so hard to keep that freedom from a certain segment of our population.
