Letter to the Editor: Virginia can't afford cuts lost in sequestration

Recently, there have been reports that members of Congress are preparing to allow the across-the-board "sequestration" cuts. While the sequester would cut spending across the federal budget, our lawmakers must work together to put our economy on track for growth, not force indiscriminate budget cuts.

Here in Virginia, more than 207,500 jobs could be lost if sequestration is implemented, with more than 130,000 of those as a result of cuts to national defense. Virginia families cannot afford this.

I urge the Virginia delegation to lead the way and work together to come up with a plan that increases revenue, protects our economy and slows the growth of the national debt. Several viable ideas have been proposed by both parties, but they're just sitting on desks on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers should act now to pass the best proposals to avoid unnecessary economic hardship for Virginians.
