Letter to the Editor: Maybe the firehouse should be relocated
One time, in another city, I was told that the siren served an extra service. If it blew twice, stopped, blew twice again, it indicated the fire was northeast of town. If it blew three times and stopped and repeated, the fire was in a different direction from town. That was over 80 years ago.
Today, if I am planning to go downtown to the post office, drug store, Town Hall, or a business and I hear the fire siren go off, I delay my trip to downtown for about 20 to 30 minutes, or I take a back street, not King Street.
With bump outs, it may be a good idea to stay out of downtown for an hour.
In modern times, many firehouses have been located away from downtown. Perhaps the firehouse should be relocated near U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 81.
