Letter to the Editor: Don't tie up your dog!
What is going on in Warren County and surrounding counties in Virginia? I hear barking to the north, I hear barking to the east, to the west, to the south.
Is it OK to just leave your dog, your companion and protector, your friend tied to a tree all day and all night long? No! What the heck is wrong with people!
Dogs are social animals not just dogs They love to be around their people. Just to watch TV, sit next to them, just to be near them. How much can you love someone you're willing to tie up and leave? They feel pain, suffering, depression, anger, sorrow, happiness, have puppies and love just like we do. Pain even more so, maybe. They have suffered endlessly since the dawn of mankind, being used and abused like commodities, as if they were made to be common yard tools. Humans do not give rights; all creatures are born with them. First and foremost the right to freedom.
Tying your dog up to a tree is abuse. If it were done to a human child, it would be abuse. The only reason humans put themselves above other animals is because they think they're superior, mostly because of religion. We need to move past this way of thinking, it's medieval and outdated.
Legally it isn't abuse; it's not against the law. I think it's wrong. As you can see, the laws are not perfect, and aren't suited for everyone. I wish they were, but do you see my point?
Bring your dog in at night at the very least. Stop tying them to trees and posts. Build a fence, walk your dog at night, bring them in out of the cold. They get depressed and go insane tied up all day long. And if your have two or more dogs tied close enough they can get tangled and get into horrible fights!
Just because they can stand it does not mean they like it. Summer is coming. Have a heart and change!
