Letter to the Editor: Shenandoah County seniors can't afford a tax increase

Editor:

I would like to know how many senior citizens live in Shenandoah County? Most of us are on fixed incomes and have medical bills.

Thank you Social Security for the $8 monthly increase this year - for most senior citizens this is the only "income raise" we get. Yet the proposed increase in our taxes for 2014 is 11.7 percent. I'm not sure exactly how much of an increase that will be, but we can't afford any increase as we are on a fixed income.

Most of us have lived here most of our lives, but we get no break for owning our property for many years. Taxes just keep going up.

I wonder how many on the county Board of Supervisors read our newspaper? In each issue we are still seeing foreclosures on homes and businesses. There have been no improvements in our economy since 2007, yet food and medicine and utilities continue to go up. Many senior citizens have to choose between medication and eating.

As for the fire alarm in Strasburg, it is a life-saving alarm and we need it. I remember it from my childhood days. Each time it went off I learned to pray for the volunteers and for those with the emergency. I still do.
