Letter to the Editor: Ad misrepresented Gilbert's record
This week my neighbors and I received an orange political ad that amazingly misrepresented the record of Todd Gilbert, our District 15 representative in the Virginia House.
Del. Robert Marshall invited me to look up House Bill 2340 as he was the chief patron. On Jan. 18, this amendment to the budget was presented. Marshall couldn't be there due to sickness in his family. Gilbert, a member of the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee, was asked to read Marshall's bill.
Summary: To prevent any agency, political subdivision or employee of Virginia from assisting the federal government in any investigation, prosecution, detention, arrest, search or seizure under the authority of any federal statute enacted, or executive order or regulation issued, after Dec. 31, 2012, infringing the individual right to keep and bear arms by imposing new restrictions on private transfer of firearms, firearm magazines, ammunition or components thereof.
The bill progressed through 11 steps, then was referred to the Appropriations Committee where it died.
House Bill 2340 would have been a positive affirmation of the Second Amendment. Not so very long ago, Ben Franklin told us we only have a republic if we, the people, work to hold it!
