Letter to the Editor: Sign petition to remove big money, special interests from politics

Editor:

My thanks to Ron Kibiloski for his observations on my opinions as stated on these pages.

Obviously we are in complete disagreement about the Bush administration and I am sorry that Mr. Kibiloski misinterprets my criticism of the Christian fundamentalists on issues such as women's right to choose, contraception and gay marriage as Christian bashing. If one had read my opinions on religion with a modicum of objectivity they could only conclude that I am a firm advocate for the right and have a sincere respect for all Americans to pursue the religion of their choice and have consistently called for the secular and the liberal/moderate religious communities to seek common ground in the fight for social justice for working class Americans.

For example, I am in complete agreement with Mr. Kibiloski on the sorry state of affairs of politics in this country. Thanks to the conservative leaning Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, the same court by the way that gave us eight disastrous years of the Bush administration, the law of the land is that corporations are people and money is speech protected under the first amendment, thus allowing them to buy elections and run our government.

In making this decision, the court is not only misguided in principal but wrong on the law as expressed by Justice Stevens in his eloquent dissent. " Corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no thoughts, no desires. . . . they are not themselves members of 'We the People' by whom and for whom the constitution was established."

To that end, there have been several resolutions introduced in Congress calling for a "We the People" amendment that would once and for all end corporate rule by removing the corrupting influence of money from politics.

This can only be accomplished by a vigorous grass roots movement from the people such as the Move to Amend coalition. I urge Mr. Kibiloski and all Americans who care for this country to join the more than 260,000 people and sign their petition calling for this much needed constitutional amendment that will remove big money and special interests from politics entirely.
