Letter to the Editor: Front Royal needs a taxi ordinance
In 2008 I opened a quality taxicab company in Front Royal. I was astute enough to realize that the town and county were ready for a good, clean and safe transportation company.
I instituted a set of protocols that Yellow Cab of the Shenandoah LLC must adhere to. These protocols consisted of newer Crown Victorias that were roomy, air conditioned and safe. We provided non-smoking cars. Our drivers had to be uniformed, good moral citizens and be able to pass a 10-panel drug test, a 50-state criminal background check, be non-felons and not on the sexual offenders list. If they passed this muster, they were able to drive for the company. The ability to adhere to these sets of credos required close attention to detail and the constant monitoring of our quality of service and safety of our drivers and vehicles.
Now, Front Royal is considering a taxi ordinance similar to those of Winchester, Luray and Woodstock. Transportation of the citizens demands a safe enterprise such as Yellow Cab of the Shenandoah. The public welfare and safety, especially that of children and the elderly, should be the Town’s No. 1 concern. The police chief and the county sheriff know well the importance of these requirements. A legitimate role of government is to ensure the safety of its citizens!
This is why it is vitally important that Front Royal approves a taxi ordinance that mandates the following: individuals convicted of violent crimes, armed robbery, felonious assault, distribution of drugs, reckless abandonment of children, cruelty to animals, rape, sexual molestation of minors, grand theft, grand larceny, fraud and forgery be prevented from driving taxicabs in town. In addition, the ordinance must mandate that the vehicles are safe, in good working condition and identified properly as a taxicab.
I urge the citizens to attend the public hearing being held at 10 a.m. July 24 at 102 E. Main St. Please make your concerns known about your safety and welfare at this meeting. If you have questions or concerns, contact me at 540-622-6060.
