Letter to the Editor: Withdrawing support of troop is homophobic
With all due respect to Terry Keaton [who wrote a letter to the editor on July 12], as a professed Christian one would expect a little more honesty on his part.
Homophobia, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is the irrational fear of, aversion to or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals. If his church is withdrawing support for Crew 247 simply for no other reason other than that the Boy Scouts of America chose to change their long-standing policy and admit homosexuals, that makes the church members by definition homophobic, which of course is their right and that right is to be respected. It’s just that when one who professes love for another and believes in denying that person of the same rights as all others smacks of hypocrisy.
I am sure that you will forgive me, as a person of reason, for expressing my dismay that one could base the reason for such an important conclusion that affects the lives of millions of human beings who simply want to enjoy the same rights as others on a few words written thousands of years ago by scientifically illiterate men who thought the world was flat, that the sun orbited the earth and that women were the property of men. Its simply nonsensical.
