Letter to the Editor: Council should pass a strong taxi ordinance

Editor:

I am writing to support a strong taxi ordnance for the town of Front Royal.

Taxis are a public conveyance that must be operated in a safe and responsible manner. As the former co-owner of Yellow Cab of the Shenandoah, we always performed a criminal background check on all applicants for driver positions with our company. That process continues today.

What we found when our professional contractor performed the background checks was that about 40 percent of the applicants were convicted violent felony offenders and that 4 percent were convicted sex offenders and pedophiles. Needless to say, we didn't want pedophiles taking school children to school or picking them up after school. Additionally, we required our taxis to meet all safety standards and be smoke free.

A strong taxi ordnance is an issue of public safety and the Town Council has an opportunity to ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors by passing a strong taxi ordnance.
