Letter to the Editor: It's time to be responsible citizens

Editor:

In Charles Dickens' "Christmas Carol", Scrooge gets a visit from Jacob Marley. Jacob Marley, in death, wears the chains he forged in life through his business dealings with mankind and has come to warn Scrooge that he will suffer the same fate if he does not change.

In America, we send our money to the local, state, and federal governments and trust that those we have elected will deal honestly with us. Unfortunately, this trust has been destroyed and when we take monies from these governments and fail to educate ourselves about our leaders, we forge the economic chains that enslave us not in death but in life.

The majority of the nation's citizens used to take care of themselves without help from governments. Now the pendulum has swung the other way and too many of our citizens want the governments to take care of their needs from the cradle to the grave. Why have we sold our freedom, our future for gold and silver coin? Why have we allowed those who work for us to dictate to us what we will do? Why have we refused to educate ourselves about our government? We are lazy citizens and lazy citizens make bad governments.

The plantation of the South is alive and well in Washington, D.C., and the owners reside in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government. Those working the plantation are the lazy citizens. We have forfeited our rights by not voting, by not educating ourselves about the issues by attending governmental meetings, and by not holding our leaders responsible for their actions while in office.

It is time to stop making our own chains of slavery. It is time to rise up and be responsible citizens. It is time to get involved in making good government.

Read the Constitution! Read the Declaration of Independence! Discover who is in charge.

Hope you had a nice Independence Day.
