Letter to the Editor: An expression of outrage
I recently saw two different ads sponsored by the Republicans promoting the idea of defunding the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare) and I am frankly amazed that the news media, various commentators and the general public have not expressed outrage by this strategy to block a legitimate legislature. The idea behind the defunding, of course, is to block the implementation of Obamacare.
The Affordable Care Act was passed by the Congress and it is the law of the land. It was ruled by the Supreme Court as constitutionally correct and again, it is supposed to be the law of the land. The only way that this act can be rescinded, according to our democratic government process, is by Congress passing a law repealing it, as the Republicans in Congress have tried unsuccessfully many times “ad nausea.”
To use defunding as a strategy to undermine this duly processed law is an attempt by certain Republican congressmen to undermine our democracy, our way of governance. It is wrong and I am frankly shocked that our media have not put these Republicans to task for attempting to upend our democracy by this defunding tactic. To me, it is a form of subversion, a form of terrorism that must be stopped.
Just think, if they are successful, then why not go after other legitimate legislatures that the Republicans have a prejudice against, like the child labor laws, or the Violence Against Women Act, or the Civil Rights Act, Social Security, etc.
If they are successful in crippling Obamacare by simply blocking its funding, our democracy will unravel. Where the hell is our media! Where is the protest! I fear for my country .
