Dr. Jon Winter has something to say about an issue plaguing the health of many Americans, and a prestigious national organization, the American Academy of Family Practice, is helping him get his message out to the world.
The academy has awarded the Front Royal family physician a grant to back his study of fatness at birth and beyond. His goal is to bring standardization to methods of identifying infants who are at risk of becoming overweight as they grow up.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17 percent, or 12.5 million children and teens aged 2-19, are obese. The CDC also reports that more than one-third of American adults, or 35.7 percent, are obese. A study like the one this local doctor is working on may help reduce these figures in the future by giving pediatricians more tools very early on to help guide families toward a more healthy lifestyle.
We commend Dr. Winters for his work on this important study.
