I am supporting Roy Boyles for commissioner of the revenue because he is the most qualified person for the position.
The commissioner needs to be a leader, and Boyles' leadership experience is extensive. In the Commissioner's Office he serves as the supervisor of the Real Estate Department.
He has been my colleague on the Warren County School Board since 2004, and he was chairman of the board for four years. Boyles has also served on the Board of Trustees of Warren Memorial Hospital and as chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, he was named president of the Virginia School Boards Association, the largest business organization in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The commissioner also needs to be dedicated to the citizens of Warren County. Boyles is the only candidate who has devoted 35 years of service to this community through leadership positions and membership in organizations such as Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and Salvation Army.
At the Oct. 3 forum, Boyles' goals that he has published for the last several months were read at the beginning of the forum:
- Improve customer service by extending office hours.
- Update the commissioner of the revenue website so that citizens may apply for business licenses, land use, and tax relief directly on the website.
- Request that the county Board of Supervisors adjust the eligibility requirements for tax relief for elderly and disabled persons.
Only after his goals were read in an opening statement did the other two candidates embrace and repeat them.
The commissioner of the revenue needs to have excellent people skills. Not only does Boyles have an excellent working relationship with the employees in the Commissioner's Office, but he also has a wide base of support among Warren County citizens. He is a man of integrity and I am proud to call him my friend.
Please vote for Boyles for commissioner of the revenue of Warren County on Nov. 5!
