Letter to the Editor: Restore public option in Affordable Care Act

Editor:

In the negotiations leading to the passage of the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama made various concessions to the Republicans in an effort to make it a bipartisan bill.

Remember the public option, it was removed.

Meanwhile, the Republicans did everything they could to defeat the bill. A common sense provision to control costs was removed after Republicans raised a lot of hysteria about "death panels." Even though they couldn't stop passage, the Republicans did manage to make the act less efficient. Some changes will help.

Now, what if a small group of progressive senators threaten to force a default on the national debt unless the Republicans agree to restore the public option? That would be outrageous, but that is exactly the tactic Speaker of the House John Boehner is using to reverse the vote he lost three years ago.

Obama has made it clear that he is willing to discuss changes in the Affordable Care Act. There are lots of ways it can be made better. I would like to see the public option restored. Perhaps Obama would talk about removing the medical device tax if the Republicans would seriously consider some cost control provisions.
