Letter to the Editor: Meeting set for those who want to help homeless
In response to Roy W. Combs' letter to the editor on Nov. 13, I, too, attended the meeting at Antioch Church. I would like to offer what I heard presented by Family Promise from Summit, N.J.
This religion-based organization has succeeded in assisting homeless families with children across America. It has established viable programs in urban, suburban, and rural areas, and it has now about 182 sites.
What was presented was a program to address the plight of a targeted population of homeless people because no program can be all things to all people. No organization can address simultaneously the needs of single men, women, abused families, and families with children. Each population has its own needs and Family Promise had dedicated its program to families with children. (Shenandoah county has 26-28 school-aged children who are homeless.)
