Letter to the Editor: Let’s show some respect for other views

Just before the recent Virginia election, while shopping in Woodstock, this note was left on our car:

I just wanted to let you know that someone vandalized your car by slapping an Obama sticker on it. The last thing you want to be doing is driving around all day looking like an idiot.
Take care, A Good Samaritan

Though we find the incident humorous, we are sure the individual was serious in expressing a political opinion. However, this brings to mind a general observation concerning respect for opposing political views. (Nothing was said about the American flag on our bumper.)

One of the safeguards, and greatness of our democratic system, is the tolerance for and openness in support of pluralistic political decision-making; and, a willingness to seek common political ground. To quote Thomas Jefferson, “I may not believe in what you say, but I will defend to my death your right to say it.”

A New Year resolution might include a willingness to show respect for other views, to work together to find the middle ground and to build a robust society for all.
