Letter to the Editor: Do something for the park

Editor:

In response to G.A. Settle's letter of Jan. 16 suggesting that Shenandoah National Park be turned over to the state, what makes him think that the state would manage it better?

It isn't really closed, you know. The lodges and restaurants are closed, and so are the visitor centers and campgrounds -- because there is not enough use to justify keeping them open. But you can go into the park for a drive or hike or to camp.

Nearby Shenandoah River/Guest and Sky Meadows State Parks don't offer much more. And the state has done nothing with the Seven Bends Park land that has been available for a long time.

If you want to help, G.A. Settle, join the Friends of Shenandoah National Park or the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club or the Virginia Master Naturalists and do something for the park.
