Editorial: Don't fall prey to scammers

Scammers are using every way imaginable to try to take your money, whether it's by phone, email, delivered mail or in person. What may seem to be a legitimate offer at first glance could cost you a lot of money.

Warren County Sheriff Daniel McEathron's words of warning in a news story this week about a mysterious mailing sent to some area residents make sense: "Our rule of thumb is, if you don't make hand-to-hand or eye-to-eye contact, then stay away from them."

But even if you do make personal contact with someone offering you his services, beware.
With spring - and hopefully nicer weather - just a few weeks away, visits from people going door-to-door who want to do yard work, pave your drive or fix your roof will start to increase. Make sure you know who this person is -- check him out before making any kind of deal. If he wants to do business with you, then he should not have any trouble giving you information and references, and time for you to make some calls. Don't let him pressure you.
