Letter to the Editor: Letter from supervisor was unjustified

Editor:

OK, enough of the teacher bashing. Already it seems like every time I pick up a newspaper someone is bashing our teachers.

As in most cases, complaining people come down on the ones who are not in a position to defend themselves. Example: if your electric bill is too high or a product is not up to standards, you complain a gripe to whoever answers the phone and has no control over the situation at hand. The latest letter from a member of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors was just that, very unjustified.

If you think a teacher is overpaid, then step into one of their positions for a week and you will get a different perspective. Several years ago before we got politically correct, a teacher was a teacher and that was that. Today they have to be a counselor, babysitter and do things that are not taught at home. And God forbid you discipline one of these brats who have no respect for themselves or anyone else for that matter.

If you think a teacher comes to work at 8 a.m. and goes home at 4 p.m. without any cares in the world, then you are mistaken 100 percent. I know full well teachers pull money out of their own pocket to pay for things a student needs or see that a child gets food and many other things they don't get at home. If it's a snow day and you think a teacher sits at home without a care and gets two or three months paid vacation, then think again.

I had two children and five grandchildren who got a wonderful education in the Shenandoah County School system. Every person in the system went way beyond the call of duty to see to that. I am extremely grateful for everyone who stands in the classroom in today's world. I am not on the outside looking in. I was in the classroom with teachers a few years ago and saw first hand what they had to deal with.
