Letter to the Editor: Get involved, stay informed

Editor,

I am the newly elected Shenandoah County School Board member representing District 4 and I wanted to introduce myself.

I am a graduate of the Virginia Tech Pamplin School of Business, majoring in marketing management. I work full time managing two small businesses in Woodstock, and my husband and I have two children.

In addition to attending conferences, workshops and making in-school visits to prepare for my duties on the board, I've learned that a vital component of the job is committee work. Participating in four advisory committees has proven to be an invaluable resource in learning the detail needed to make educated decisions in the best interest of the school system. I sincerely thank my fellow board members, Dr. Raley, School Board office staff, the teachers and staff who have so generously helped me acclimate to the position, especially during such a critical time for Shenandoah County.

The county is at a monumental crossroads. Do we remain stagnant and "just get by," or do we look to the future and keep moving forward? It is an economic fact that strong school systems are the foundation of quality communities. Whether or not you have children currently enrolled in the system, top notch schools attract and retain businesses, increase the tax base and enhance the quality of life through available community services. As a young family living and working in Shenandoah County, it is my genuine hope that we lay the groundwork now to ensure that the next generation thrives.

I come from a family where service to country and community have never been seen as a burden, rather an inherent responsibility instilled in the recognition of generations past. I encourage fellow residents to get involved, stay informed and participate in the spirit of community by attending the Board of Supervisors public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at W.W. Robinson Elementary.

Katie Freakley, Shenandoah County School Board member
