Letter to the Editor: Let freedom ring

Editor:

Today, with so many of our freedoms being challenged, one has to dig a little deeper to get excited about our national celebration, Independence Day.

Because so many dedicated men and women have served in the armed forces and fought to keep us a free nation, we have been blessed to be free from the tyranny of other nations and, to be sure, we should be thankful that we live in the United States.

But what happens when the threat of loosing our freedom comes from within our own boundaries? Who then is deployed?

In Mark 3:34, Jesus said, "... if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand." Would that our leaders would heed his warning.

Yes, our problems are many. But we are not without hope. Though we can never turn back the clock, we can look back and learn and change our course.

Those who penned the familiar words to our national anthems have said it well. These words ring with truth:

From "America" by Samuel F. Smith: "Our fathers' God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing. Long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light; protect us by thy might, great God our king."

From "America the Beautiful" by Katherine L. Bates: "O beautiful for heroes proved, in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life. America! America! May God thy gold refine, ''til all success be nobleness and every gain, divine."

And from "The Star Spangled Banner" by Francis Scott Key: "O thus be it ever, where free men shall stand between their loved homes and the war's desolation; blest with victory and peace, may this heaven-rescued land, praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just; And this be our motto: 'In God do we trust.' Then the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

May God bless America.
