Letter to the Editor: Strasburg needs to keep concession stand

In the proposed 2014 Strasburg Economic Restructuring Plan, Part Three includes enhancement to the current public parking lot behind the Strasburg Fire Department.

The plan proposes to remove the existing fire department’s storage shed and food concession stand to provide for an additional 10 to 12 parking spaces.  This concession stand is used by the Strasburg Fire Department during the year, and by the North Shenandoah Ruritan Club and the Strasburg Lion’s Club during Strasburg’s May Fest. Both clubs provide over 400 man hours of service to the public by providing food during the annual carnival.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping the existing concession stand in the parking lot enhancement plan.  Since 2004, the Ruritan Club has been assisting the Lion’s Club during May Fest. During this same period, the North Shenandoah Ruritan Club has raised and donated over $50,000 to 65 local organization and individuals.

The concession stand provided the venue to raise approximately 80 percent of that $50,000.  Some of the local organizations receiving donations from the Ruritan Club are the Strasburg Compassion Cupboard, Strasburg Fire Department and Rescue Squad, FFA, 4-H, Shenandoah County Empty Stocking Fund, individual student scholarships and various local school programs.

These monetary donations are in addition to what the Lion’s Club provides to the local community as well.  I feel that keeping the concession stand will provide more good to the local community than 10 additional parking spaces.

I highly encourage the Town Council to keep the current concession stand, add it to the enhanced public parking plan and make structural enhancements to the building similar to those proposed for the Brill building and taxi stand.

Treasurer, North Shenandoah Ruritan Club
