Letter to the Editor: Cartoon adds to incivility of political discourse

I am writing in response to the political cartoon by Ramirez which was published in your paper on April 27.
It is deeply disturbing if the intent is to imply that President Obama “hates America.” Publishing such a piece adds to the incivility of our political discourse, fostering an environment in which respectful disagreement is impossible.
I imagine that, like me, our President “hates” certain aspects of America – perhaps racism, corporate greed, and environmental degradation – but that makes us no less believers in and supporters of everything that is good about our country. Did the author of the hymn “America the Beautiful” hate our country when she wrote about our need for improvement? America! America! May God thy gold refine, Till all success be nobleness, And ev’ry gain divine!
