Letter to the Editor: If board wants to give teachers raise, so be it

Once again Cindy Bailey seems to be on a trend attacking our teachers. One would ask what is really behind all this? There is an old saying supposedly by Native Americans: “May I not judge my brother until I have walked a mile in his moccasins.” I can’t think of any job more demanding than that of a teacher.

Many decades ago in my school years, the teacher was a teacher and that was that. Today a teacher has to be a parent as well as many other things in a child’s life. Many children come to school without a meal under their belt, no love at home, broken relationships, single parents, moms working more than one job just to get by and the list goes on and on. The child comes to school broken and battered on the inside.

I know without a doubt teachers pull money out of their own pocket to see that their students get things needed for the classroom, and in some cases a meal and so many things we have no clue about.

If the School Board sees fit to give raises, so be it. They are elected to do a job, so let them do it. The Cindy Baileys are not there behind the scenes and I thank God they are not teachers if I had kids in school.

My children and grandchildren got a wonderful education in Shenandoah County, and no matter what the salary, it was worth every penny. I challenge anyone to sit down with a teacher and listen to what they have to do today. It will shock you if you have a heart.

Since teachers come from the human race, I am sure there is a bad apple in the basket every once in a while. Every profession has a few that do not measure up. If you really screw up, they put you in the White House or make you secretary of state. That’s another letter for the future.
