Letter to the Editor: What happened to bipartisanship, cooperation?

I enjoyed Gene Rigelon’s letter in your April 2 edition. He must have started following politics shortly before I emigrated to the United States and started following our politics. My sponsors in Houston made sure I would be a good, loyal hard working and contributing Republican. Unfortunately, their Republican Party no longer exists. Rest in Peace the old Republican Party.

What happened to bipartisanship and cooperation? What happened to “win/win”? Must it always be “I win/you lose?” Why must the poor stay poor while the rich get richer? Tuition for our WWII GI Bill was free, and yet it created the world’s greatest economic engine, right here in America. Today, only rich people can afford to pay for their children’s education. Everyone else graduates deeply in debt, if they actually graduate.

I agree with Mr. Rigelon’s quotation from Sen. Carl Schurtz that true patriotism means “Our country when right to be kept right, when wrong to be put right.” Note the small “r.”

Progressives, please wake up! Every one of you! As radio talk show host Ed Schultz would say, it is time to get to work.
