Editorial: Avoid becoming a statistic this weekend
Warmer temperatures, lower gas prices and the Memorial Day holiday could draw a record number of draw Virginians out on the highways this weekend.
Travel organization AAA predicts 37.2 million people across America will travel 50 miles or more from home — with 33 million traveling on the highways. That’s the highest travel volume seen in 10 years.
With that many people out and about, do take care. Obey speed limits, don’t drink and drive, watch out for the other guy, and do click that seat belt — even if you’re just heading down to the grocery store. Local police will have extra patrols out to enforce traffic safety laws, and officers will be writing tickets if they find seat belt violations.
Following each holiday, we receive news releases from local and state law enforcement detailing the number of violations recorded in our area over the holiday as well as a statewide total of traffic accidents and fatalities. Avoid being a statistic that we’ll report on next week. If you’re traveling this weekend, proceed with caution.
