Letter to the Editor: It must have slipped Del. Gilbert’s mind

I see that recently Del. Todd Gilbert said, “My concern is that the ultimate goal of the far left is not to secure rights for gay individuals but to tear down religious institutions and the belief systems that support them…” He said this in response to a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court supporting same sex marriage.  Interesting that he has had nothing to say about the recent attacks against black churches in the South.  As a friend of mine said, “That must have slipped his mind.”

He probably doesn’t know that between 1995 and 2005 over 2,000 black churches have burned up in this country, as far as we know.  There could be many more because the Bush administration chose not to continue funding the task force set up by President Clinton to track this phenomenon.  And so black churches in the South continue to burn, and real attacks on religious liberty are felt in the black communities every month or so.

Yep, this probably just slipped by Del. Gilbert’s mind.  Otherwise, I’m sure he would be working hard to see what he could do about it.
