Letter to the Editor: The real cause of the Civil War

Some say the cause of the Civil War was slavery. Others say states rights.

One of the states rights was slavery. There’s an old saying: “It was a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight.” It was the rich men who owned plantations and had slaves. The average person was a farmer or a sharecropper.

The South has every right to be proud of her fighting ability. She won most of the battles leading up to the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. From there it was mostly downhill for the North.

Slavery is not one of God’s principles. He created every man to be a free moral agent. He punished both the North and South for slavery. The North for permitting it and the South for practicing it.

Both sides lost between 500,000 and 700,000 men. Slavery lost and freedom won! The way that it should be!
