Letter to the Editor: Candidate is a skilled trial lawyer

I have been the commonwealth’s attorney for Rockingham County and the City of Harrisonburg since 1999, and there is no job more fulfilling. I am proud that Chad Logan has been an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in my office these past 41/2 years and his diligence, tough approach and dedication to protecting the community have contributed to my office’s successful record.

During his time in Harrisonburg, Chad has obtained guilty convictions in hundreds of complex felony cases. He has tried dozens of cases before judges and juries and has a reputation of preparation and success. This includes a guilty verdict after a grueling two-day jury trial, which ensured that an embezzler was punished for stealing from a local business owner.

Chad’s success in obtaining strong outcomes is not only due to his skill as a trial attorney, but is also a result of constant communication. Chad makes sure that victims are aware of the developments in their cases and that their wishes are honored whenever possible. In one particular case, Chad took charges of sexual abuse of a child before a jury. The jury could not reach a verdict, and after consulting with the teenage victim, Chad decided to take the case to another jury. Chad did not give up or back down, and the second jury found the defendant guilty, vindicating the child.

Chad has thought long and hard about seeking the position of commonwealth’s attorney. He understands the gravity of serving his community and knows that hard work is needed to be both a successful prosecutor and an effective commonwealth’s attorney. He has an excellent reputation with the law enforcement of my jurisdiction, many of whom have reached out to let me know what a good job he has done for them. Chad is willing to put in the time, both in the courtroom and in the office. He is the consummate public servant, making sure that the criminal justice system protects the community and reflects its values.

Chad is an accomplished attorney and community advocate. I am lucky to have him on my team.

Marsha Garst, commonwealth’s attorney for Rockingham County and the City of Harrisonburg
