Letter to the Editor: What’s more important – cellphone or child?

I was in Winchester the day before Christmas. Coming out of a grocery store I saw a young woman walking along with her cellphone in her ear. Her little daughter, maybe 3 or 4 years old, was running ahead of her. She called out to the child about being careful.
I thought to myself, “Put the dang phone away and take your child’s hand if you want to keep her safe.”
I’ve been seeing more and more occurrences of events such as this in recent years in stores, parking lots, etc. When I see Mummy or Daddy holding the child’s hand,  I am extremely happy.
The disgusting thing to think of is that if the child should be hit by a car, the parent likely will get a lawyer and sue the driver, when in fact it is the fault of the child’s parent.
