Letter to the Editor: We must speak out against threats

Editor:

I must say that I give Leroy Donald high marks for consistency in his lemming-like support of presidents who show no compunction in resorting to egregious lies in order to pursue their respective agendas. As one of those “mad liberals,” I support Mr. Donald’s right to voice his opinion, but it is also our right as patriotic Americans to speak out aggressively as we see fit in opposition to policies that we feel will affect our civil liberties.

This country was founded on the principles embodied in the Declaration of Independence, which gives us the unalienable right to life, liberty and happiness. It also goes on to say that “whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principals. … But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and provide new guards for their future security.”

With the destructive policies of this administration it is the sincere belief of a growing number of Americans that for the first time in our history those very principles articulated by our Founding Fathers are in jeopardy and we will continue to speak out in spite of the macho flag-waving rhetoric coming from the extreme right. That is what real patriotism is all about.
