Letter to the Editor: The opioid crisis

Editor:

While everyone’s in a swivet about an opioid crisis, which is truly a disaster, please spare a tear for those who suffer from unending, untreated, unbearable, chronic, debilitating pain.  The only amelioration is possible through judicious use of opioid medications.

Unfortunately, most physicians are unwilling to couch their lances and take on the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration to do so.  As a result, people who desperately need these painkillers have only three choices – buy them on the street (lousy choice), suffer with pain (terrible choice), or end the pain via suicide.

The last choice is, of course, a permanent solution to one’s pain and it certainly lowers one’s health costs.
