Letter to the Editor: Goodlatte should condemn statement

Editor:

It was with great sadness that I read the news coverage of Trump disparaging African and Latin American countries by wondering why we had to accept immigrants from “s—hole countries.”

Vulgarity aside, his sentiment is the antithesis of the ideals upon which this nation was founded. As Americans, “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” With one crude comment, Trump (again) revealed that he doesn’t believe in that most fundamental American value. Rather, he believes that people from those countries – largely people of color – are unequal, lesser, and somehow not deserving of a chance at the American dream. Trump’s comments and actions are not those of the leader of the free world, but those of a racist narcissist. He is a disgrace to the office he holds.

I call on Rep. Goodlatte, who was present in that meeting, to immediately and unequivocally condemn this crass sentiment. And I ask citizens of the valley to vote in November 2018 for candidates who will uphold American values.

Our valley and our country are better for our diversity.
