Letter to the Editor: Four Democrats in race for Goodlatte’s seat

On June 12 there will be a primary election to select the Democratic Party candidate for the 6th Congressional District, Bob Goodlatte’s old seat (he is retiring this year). Four very good candidates will be on the ballot, but I would like to mention one in particular, Peter Volosin. Peter was the first person to announce his candidacy well before anyone knew Goodlatte was retiring and has been campaigning tirelessly ever since.

What impresses me the most about Peter is that he believes in building consensus and speaking to all sides to come up with solutions that work and will help the people of the Shenandoah Valley. As a native son, Peter grew up in Roanoke, the son of a small business owner. He saw first-hand the struggles that small business owners have to deal with on a daily basis and he wants to make sure they can thrive and create more jobs. He has also been a labor organizer and understands the struggles of people who live paycheck to paycheck, and he negotiated successfully on their behalf for better pay and working conditions.

He has worked as a first responder/EMT on an ambulance and seen the tragedy of people without health insurance. He wants to make sure that everyone has access to healthcare, especially in rural areas like ours where access to full-service healthcare can be difficult. Peter has also worked overseas in international development and understands the importance of good infrastructure to help local economies grow.
