Cranberry Nut Bread

1 c. fresh chopped cranberries
½ c. chopped nuts
2 c. flour
1 T. grated orange peel
1 c. sugar
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking soda
2 T. shortening
¾ c. orange juice
1 egg, well beaten

Preheat oven 350 degrees. Grease and lightly flour a 9x9x5 in. pan. Prepare cranberries, nuts and orange peel; set aside. In a bowl mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and soda. Cut in shortening. Stir in egg, orange juice and orange peel, mixing just to moisten. Fold in cranberries and nuts. Spoon into prepared pan. Bake 60 mins. or until a wooden pick when inserted comes out clean. Cool on rack 15 mins.
