Homemade Bread

2 c. warm milk
3 T. shortening
2 T. sugar
2 ½ tsp. salt
1 pkg. dry yeast
6 c. flour

Heat milk until warm (but not hot). Add shortening to melt. In bowl, combine sugar and salt; add milk mixture and stir. Add yeast and stir. Add flour and stir until you can work dough with your hands. Knead dough on floured board until smooth and satiny (approximately 8 mins.) Place in large greased bowl, lightly grease dough and cover. Let rise until double in bulk, approximately 2 hrs. Punch dough down and let rise until double in bulk. Divide dough into 2 b alls and let stand while greasing load pans. Shape into loaves and place in loaf pans. Lightly brush with melted shortening. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 mins. Remove from pans immediately. Brush lightly with melted butter. Makes two 1 lb. loaves.
