Sandy Hook Elementary School students were treated to a rare site recently -- their principal and assistant principals puckered up and kissed "Hershey," a female llama from Fortune Hill Farms in Strasburg.

The kiss was part of a fundraiser for Signal Knob Playground. Students tossed loose change into plastic water bottles to see which school administrator would kiss the llama.

As it turned out, a parent donated money at the end and forced a three-way tie between principal Stacy Leitzel (above, right), assistant principal Brett Martin (right, center) and assistant principal Melissa Copp (right, bottom). All three kissed the llama and First Bank matched the school's donation, giving a total of $1966.64 for the playground.

This year's recipients are Adeline Guthrie and Jonathan Rios. The following is a speech given by Daily General Manager Elizabeth Smoot at the school's eighth-grade graduation ceremony on May 30:

I am honored to represent our staff tonight as I present the Northern Virginia Daily Citizenship Award. This award has been presented by the Daily to graduating middle school students in Strasburg every year since 1959.
