Daily Staff Report -- sports@nvdaily.com
The Northern Virginia Daily Sports staff collaborated to create a football top 10 list. Each staffer voted, with 10 points being awarded to the top ranked team, nine to the No. 2 team and so on. Numbers in parenthesis indicate where each team was last week.
1. Handley (1) 6-0, 0-0 Northwestern -- The Judges dominated Kettle Run despite having numerous players out with injuries. The Judges need to get healthy fast with their toughest test of the season this week at Sherando.
2. Clarke County (2) 6-0, 0-0 Bull Run -- The Eagles continue to pour on the points, easily beating Page County 53-0 last week. Clarke County will host George Mason (5-1) on Friday.
3. Sherando (4) 5-1, 1-0 Northwestern -- Sherando's win over James Wood last week moved them into second on the VHSL power ratings. A win this week over Handley will put the Warriors in the driver's seat in the battle for the Northwestern District title.
4. James Wood (3) 5-1, 0-1 Northwestern -- James Wood's loss to Sherando dropped them a couple spots in the VHSL power ratings, but they would still make the playoffs if they started this week. A win this week over Skyline will help get the Colonels back on track and back in the district title hunt.
5. Skyline (5) 5-1, 1-0 Northwestern -- The Hawks helped their chances of getting a playoff berth with last week's win over Millbrook. A win this week over James Wood would show that the Hawks are a contender for the district title.
6. Central (6) 3-2, 0-0 Shenandoah -- The Falcons had a week off to prepare for Shenandoah County rival Stonewall Jackson. The way the playoff ratings are shaping up the Falcons may need to win the Shenandoah District to make the playoffs.
7. Millbrook (7) 3-3, 0-1 Northwestern -- Last year the Pioneers lost to Skyline, but still made the playoffs. If they want to duplicate the feat this year they need to put together a winning streak in the second half of the season.
8. Warren County (8) 1-5, 0-1 Evergreen -- The Wildcats started their district season off slowly, but have a chance to regroup this week at Fauquier.
9. Stonewall Jackson (9) 1-4, 0-0 Shenandoah -- After a dissapointing loss to Madison County, the Generals begin district play against Central.
10. Strasburg (10) 1-5, 0-0 Bull Run -- The Rams had a week off to prepare for their Bull Run District opener at Manassas Park.
