SU softball picked third in conference poll

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

Shenandoah University's softball team leads five SU teams in preseason picks of the USA South Conference coaches in polls released on Wednesday by the league.

The Hornets' softball squad, which has won 30 games in each of the last two years, is the preseason No. 3 selection of 10 teams in the USA South.

Under sixth-year head coach Marlena Kotynski, Shenandoah finished second in the softball regular season last year before advancing to the USA South tournament championship game for the second time in three years.

Kotynski's team had 58 points in the poll to finish just behind Peace College.

Christopher Newport is once again selected to win the championship in 2010. The Captains won both the regular season and tournament last spring.

The Hornets' women's lacrosse team is the preseason No. 4 pick in its poll.

Shenandoah, under the direction of second-year coach Lindsey West, finished fourth last season and advanced to the USA South Conference tournament semifinals for the first time in three years.

West's club has 30 points in the poll to come in just between third-place Methodist and fifth-place Ferrum.

The 2010 preseason women's lacrosse poll is in the exact order of the finish of the 2009 regular season. The three new programs this year -- N.C. Wesleyan, Agnes Scott and LaGrange -- round out the poll in places six through eight, respectively.

Shenandoah's men's golf team is the preseason No. 6 selection in that poll. The Hornets, who finished fifth last season in the USA South Tournament, garnered 12 points to come in behind preseason No. 5 pick N.C. Wesleyan.

Methodist, the seven-time defending champions, is the preseason selection to win the conference title.

Shenandoah is the preseason No. 7 pick in men's tennis and No. 4 on the women's side.

Last season, the Hornets' women's team finished an all-time best third place in the league.

The baseball poll was announced last week, and Shenandoah was picked to win the conference.
