MADISON -- Top-seeded Madison County had no trouble against upset-minded Strasburg in the Bull Run District boys basketball tournament on Thursday, as the Mountaineers routed the Rams 73-31 to advance to the championship.
Madison County jumped out to an early double-digit lead, ending the first quarter ahead, 20-2. The Mountaineers were never threatened from there, scoring 36 more points before halftime to hold a 56-11 lead heading into the second half.
With its starters pulled for most of the second half, Madison County eased up on the Rams, who were able to generate some offense as Bub McKelvey and Derek Buckley each had a team-high eight points. It was not enough to overcome the strong presence of the Mountaineers, however, who advanced to Friday's championship to face George Mason.
